Ben Stokes, the dashing all-rounder who made England the 2019 World Cup champions, took a sudden retirement from ODI cricket. He has taken this decision after losing the ODI series against India on Sunday night. The 31-year-old Stokes, who was recently appointed as the Test captain of England, will play the last ODI of his career tomorrow i.e. on July 19 at his home ground in Durham. Actually, the three-match ODI series between England and South Africa is starting on Tuesday.

What is the Reason Behind Retirement?

Ben Stokes issued a statement saying that he will play his last ODI for England on Tuesday. Stokes said, ‘This decision was very difficult for me. I have always enjoyed playing with my teammates. I accept that I am not able to give my 100% in this format. The England jersey deserves nothing less than this. It was not only that the workload was increasing on me, but I also felt that I was eating in the place of some young man, who can contribute a lot for England.

Ben Stokes’ ODI cricket career will be remembered for his ‘Player of the Match performance in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s. With the help of Ben Stokes’ unbeaten 84, England’s team was successful in winning their first 50-over world title.

England’s Test captain Ben Stokes took 74 wickets apart from scoring 2919 runs in 104 ODIs. In an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement, Stokes was quoted as saying, ‘I will play my last One Day International match for England in Durham on Tuesday. I have decided to retire from this format.’ Ben Stokes said, ‘It was a very difficult decision. I enjoyed every moment of playing for England with my teammates. Our journey was wonderful.

I will Give Everything for Test Cricket

Stokes further said, ‘Now will be the time for me to play Test cricket and I will give everything for this. At the same time, I will be fully prepared for the T20 format as well.

Proved to be a Flop Against India

Recently, Ben Stokes was not able to perform much in the ODI series against India. Stokes was flop with both bat and ball. He scored just 48 runs with the bat in 3 matches at a simple average of 16. At the same time, he did not get a single wicket in the entire series.
