The Union Cabinet has approved the updating of the National Population Register (NPR). The cabinet has also approved funding allocation of Rs 3900 crore for NPR updating. CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act): Under the new law, citizenship of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan due to religious persecution will be granted citizenship. Those who have come before 31 December 2014 will get citizenship. They will have the fundamental rights under the Constitution. No law, including the CAA, can take away these rights. The Muslims will also not be affected by the CAA. A citizen of any country or religion can apply under Section 6 of the Citizenship Act 1955 of India. The current amendment does not tamper with that.
