History of International Yoga Day
The celebration of International Yoga Day was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2015. Prime Minister Modi had proposed to celebrate Yoga Day in the meeting of the United Nations. On 11 December 2014, it was announced that every year 21 June would be celebrated as International Yoga Day. In fact, on 27 September 2014, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi called for celebrating Yoga Day across the world in the Joint General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal. On 11 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. Why is World Yoga Day Celebrated on 21st June?
The main reason behind this is that June 21 is the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere, which is also known as the summer solstice. According to Indian tradition, the sun is Dakshinayan after the summer solstice. It is believed that the time of Surya Dakshinayana is beneficial for attaining spiritual accomplishments. Along with this, people’s life is also prolonged by doing yoga. In view of this, Yoga Day is celebrated every year on the 21st of June. The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015.
