Speed of 5G: A lot changed in 2020 with the arrival of the Corona pandemic. The use of virtual hearings, online shopping, online classes, online doctor’s advice and telemedicine suddenly increased in court. People started feeling the need for faster internet. Telecom companies have sensed this call for 5G technology in the country. This is the reason why jobs related to 5G are increasing rapidly for the last few months.
According to data analytics company Global Data, 5G-related vacancies in India doubled in January-March 2021 as compared to October-December 2020. Ajay Thalluri, Business Fundamental Analyst at this firm, says that hiring may increase in the coming months, as many sectors will be affected by the arrival of 5G.

High Demand for Engineering and Software Skills
- According to the report of talent solution company Xpheno, more than 1.5 lakh people will be needed to start 5G in India soon. Experts say that the demand for IP networking, firmware, automation, machine learning, big data experts, cyber security experts, electronic engineers will increase. Most of the recruitment will be done by telecom and IoT companies.
- According to the report of TeamLease Services, 5G services starting at the end of the year will not only increase internet speed but will also provide bumper jobs for the next two years. Most of these jobs will be on contract, but there will be a big relief on the employment front in the country battling the pandemic. Deval Singh, the business head of this firm, said that despite the second wave of corona infection, the service of telecom companies continues to expand.
Only Cisco Accounts for 30% of the Total 5G Vacancies
- Data analytics company Global Data has analyzed 5G-related jobs between January 2020 and March 2021. According to the report, Cisco alone has released 30% of the total vacancies. It is a US-based multinational company that is investing Rs 3.6 lakh crore on 5G projects across the world.
- At number two is the Swedish firm Ericsson which has a stake in 20% of the vacancies. Similarly, Capgemini, Debt and Helvett-Packard have also taken out 5G-related jobs. In India, most of the hiring related to 5G is done by global firms. Jio, Airtel and Vi have not yet released massive vacancies for 5G.
- Initially, work is available in the posts like Transmission Station Engineer, Drive Test Engineer and Maintenance Engineer. One can go from circuit designer to strategic mass developer. Network Engineer, Product Designer, Database Developer are the popular professions. There are also good employment opportunities in machine-to-machine communication, telecom manufacturing, infrastructure and services.
5G Service May be Launched in Early 2022
4 major companies in India are preparing to launch 5G. In July 2020, Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio Platforms would develop a 5G solution for India. A few months later, Jio joined hands with Qualcomm Technology of California. This is expected to accelerate the work of infrastructure and service of the domestic 5G network. According to media reports, 5G-supporting phones and 5G launching can be announced in Reliance’s annual general meeting to be held on June 24, 2021.

Airtel has completed 5G testing in Hyderabad and is ready for commercial rollout. Vi and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) are also ready to conduct 5G trials. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said at a recent event of National Informatics Center Services, ‘We lag behind the world in 2G, 3G, 4G, but India will run faster than the world in 5G.’ Significantly, 5G service has started in more than 60 countries.
