Happy Engineers Day 2021: Engineers Day is celebrated on 15th September because on this day in the year 1860, the great engineer of the country and Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born. They have given a new look to India by creating the country, which hardly anyone can forget. This day is celebrated to pay respect to the engineers of the country and to appreciate their work. This year we are celebrating his 161st birth anniversary.
History and Significance of Engineers Day
In 1968, the date of birth of Dr. M. Visvesvaraya was declared as Engineers Day by the Government of India. Since then, every year on 15 September, Engineers Day is celebrated. Born on 15 September 1860 in Kolar district of Mysore, Dr. M. Visvesvaraya’s father Srinivasa Sastri was a Sanskrit scholar and Ayurveda physician. Visvesvaraya’s mother’s name was Venkachamma. Born in an ordinary family, when M Visvesvaraya was only 12 years old, his father passed away. Even in difficult circumstances, he completed his schooling and then took a degree in civil engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune.

After which the Government of Maharashtra appointed him on the post of Assistant Engineer in Nashik. When he was only 32 years old, he devised a plan to send a supply of water from the Indus river to the town of Sukkur, which was liked by all the engineers. The government formed a committee to find ways to improve the irrigation system. For this, MV invented a new block system by making a steel door and stopped the flow of water.
Today this system is being used all over the world. Visvesvaraya had also prepared a plan to tie the waters of two rivers named Musa and Isa. Thereafter he was appointed as the Chief Engineer of Mysore. Sir Visvesvaraya was not only praised by the Government of India, but also received honorary awards and memberships from across the world. He died on 14 April 1962 at the age of 101. But his life is still a source of inspiration for all the engineers of our country.
Interesting Story Related to Train Journey
Dr. Visvesvaraya was once traveling by train during the British rule. Most of the British passengers were with him in that train, they were making fun of Dr. Visvesvaraya during the journey considering him to be a fool and illiterate, while Dr. Visvesvaraya was sitting in serious posture, he suddenly pulled the rail chain and stopped the train. After a while the guard came and asked who pulled the chain. Happy Engineers Day.

Then Dr. Visvesvaraya said that I have pulled the chain, because I feel that the railway track is broken at some distance from here. On this the guard asked how did you come to know, then Visvesvaraya said that there is a difference between the sound of the tracks and the natural speed of the vehicle. When the track was examined, it was found that the joints of the railway track were open from one place. Happy Engineers Day.
Important Facts About Engineers Day
- One of the extraordinary works of Visvesvaraya was the construction of Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. Its plan was made in the year 1909 and it was completed in the year 1932.
- Visvesvaraya wrote books titled Reconstruction of India and Planned Economy for India and also guided India’s economic development.
- For the outstanding work done by him, the Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in the year 1955. He was also honored with the knighthood award by the British government.
- The word engineering is derived from the Latin word ingenium. It means natural dexterity.
- Visvesvaraya was the Diwan of Mysore and his tenure lasted from 1912–1918 AD.
- In Bombay he introduced the block system of irrigation and flood gates of water.
- He was a part of railway bridge projects and water supply schemes in Bihar and Orissa.
- The Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore, the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and the dam in Pune’s Khadakwasla Reservoir are very special, apart from this, the credit of building Hyderabad City also goes to Dr. Visvesvaraya.
