5G Spectrum Auction: The auction process of 5G spectrum in the country began on Tuesday. With the largest spectrum auction ever, this is seen as a big step towards a new era. Apart from the three major mobile service providers, Adani Data Networks of the Adani Group is also participating in the auction process. Apart from Adani Group, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea will also bid for spectrum. A total of 72 GHz airwaves will be auctioned in this auction.
Which Spectrum is Being Auctioned?
Spectrum of 72,097.85 MHz will be auctioned for 20 years. The spectrum frequencies for which the auction is taking place include the bands of 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz. According to reports, most telecom service providers will bid for spectrum in the mid- and high-bands to bring services with speeds and capacity that are about 10 times higher than 4G in the country.
The companies have deposited Earnest Money Deposits (EMDs) with the Department of Telecommunications for bidding. Reliance Jio has deposited 14,000 crores, Airtel 5,500 crores, Vodafone-Idea 2,200 crores, and Adani Group has deposited 100 crores EMDs.
Each Company’s EMD Deposit Amount is Different, How will It Affect the Bidding?
The EMD amount indicates which company can buy more spectrum. Along with this, this amount also reflects the company’s strategy and ability to buy spectrum. Eligibility marks are awarded to the applicant on the basis of EMD. Based on this, he can try to buy a certain amount of airwaves in the chosen spectrum band. Based on the amount of EMD, experts estimate that Adani Group can buy spectrum worth around Rs 700 crore.
Why are there so many differences in the EMD of Different Companies?
There is a huge difference in the EMD of all the three telecom companies. Jio’s EMD amount is much higher as compared to others. Adani Group has the lowest EMD amount. However, Adani Group has said that it is participating in the auction to build a private 5G network. According to experts, Jio can buy a spectrum worth Rs 1.3 lakh crore. It is possible to buy Jio 700 MHz band as well, which is quite suitable for consumer-related applications. 5G Spectrum Auction.
Experts say that Airtel can bid for spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 25 GHz bands. It is being said that Airtel is considering offering 5G services from circles like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu. At the same time, Vodafone Idea will be able to bid for spectrum only for the minimum required.
What Difference will the Arrival of 5G Make?
Compared to 4G, the user will get more technical facilities in 5G. Internet download speed in 4G is limited to 150 megabytes per second. In 5G it can go up to 10 GB per second. Users will be able to download even the heaviest files in just a few seconds. Upload speed in 5G will also be up to 1 GB per second, which is only up to 50 Mbps in 4G network. On the other hand, due to the greater range of 5G network than 4G, it will be able to connect with many more devices without reducing the speed.
Will Data Plans Become Expensive After Their Arrival?
The biggest question for users is the cost to be paid for 5G internet. Since spectrum auction has not taken place in India so far, the telecom companies have not given any statement regarding this. However, due to the cost of bringing in the new technology, the price of 5G service is expected to be higher than 4G.
If the difference in the prices of 4G and 5G is seen in the countries where 5G services have been launched, then it is revealed that in the US, where 4G unlimited services had to be spent up to $ 68 (about five thousand rupees), while 5G This difference has increased to $ 89 (about Rs 6500). This difference varies under different plans. 5G plans are 10 to 30 percent more expensive than 4G.
However, this difference is expected to be much smaller in India, as the cost of data in India has been among the lowest in the world over the years. In March this year, Airtel’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Randeep Sekhon had said that 5G plans will be kept around 4G. Randeep Raina, CTO of mobile company Nokia India, has also said in an interview that the prices of the plans will be kept low for the early rollout of 5G in India.
When will the Common Consumer Start Getting 5G Services?
The central government can launch 5G services by the end of this year or early next year. According to reports, 5G services will start in 12 cities for testing from September itself. However, it may take till the first quarter of 2023 for it to reach all over India.
Apart from 5G Speed, What Other Facilities will be available?
With the launch of 5G, speculations are being made to change our lives, businesses, and the way we work. In fact, the advanced technology and high capabilities of 5G will connect everything together – home, driverless car, smart office, smart city, and advanced artificial intelligence. In many ways, the better and impossible changes we often think of with technology, 5G networks are all possible.
It is expected that 5G technology will play a big role in the field of artificial intelligence – especially in hospitals, airports, and data collection. The next generation of wireless technology won’t just be limited to phones.
